About Taguig

Information about Taguig Taguig, municipality in the northern Philippines, on the island of Luzon, in Rizal Province. Part of the Manila metropolitan area and the National Capital Region, Taguig is located about 13 km (about 8 mi) southeast of Manila proper. It is bordered by Muntinglupa on the south; by Paranaque and Pasay on the west; by Makati, Pateros, and Pasig on the north; and by Laguna de Bay, the Philippines' largest lake, on the east. The municipality was formerly an old farming town and is today a residential and industrial suburb of Manila. The area is noted for clothing and shoe manufacturing. Taguig has a portion of the Manila American Memorial Cemetery within its boundaries (most of the cemetery is located in Makati). The cemetery contains the graves of 17,000 Allied soldiers from World War II (1939-1945). The American Battle Monuments Commission, an independent agency of the United States government, maintains the cemetery. Like many of Manila's outer suburbs, Taguig grew rapidly in the 1980s; from 1980 to 1990, its population increased by 99 percent (compared to 34 percent for the entire National Capital Region and 26 percent for the nation). Population (1999) 472,442.
