About Marikina
Marikina, municipality in the northern Philippines, on the island of Luzon, in Rizal Province. Part of the Manila metropolitan area and the National Capital Region, Marikina is located on the Marikina River 16 km (10 mi) east of Manila's downtown and 8 km (5 mi) north of the municipality of Pasig. Marikina is bordered on the west by Quezon City and on the south by Pasig. One of greater Manila's newer suburbs, Marikina is an important residential and industrial area, with textile and shoe factories prominent among local industries. Marikina's population has grown rapidly in recent years. Between 1980 and 1990 the population grew by 47 percent (compared to 34 percent for the entire National Capital Region and 26 percent for the nation). Population (1999) 398,068.
